Get quotesWhat portaloo hire actually involves
Portaloo hire covers the everyday self-contained portable toilet used on Australian building sites, at events, on farms and during renovations. 'Portaloo' started as a brand name and became the generic term, so suppliers use it interchangeably with 'portable toilet hire' — you are looking at the same unit either way.
A standard portaloo is a single-stall cabin with a bench toilet, waste tank, ventilation and usually a hand sanitiser dispenser. It needs no plumbing or power, which is why it suits temporary work. It does need firm, level ground and enough truck clearance to be delivered and later collected.
The decision that matters most is not brand but servicing. A unit on a busy site with ten workers needs a different pump-out schedule from one on a quiet residential renovation, and servicing frequency is the main reason two quotes for 'the same' portaloo differ.
Indicative portaloo hire cost is $150–$250 per week on an ongoing hire, or $220–$380 for a weekend event including delivery, collection and one service. See the full cost guide.
Specifications and requirements
- Typical footprint
- About 1.1m x 1.1m, roughly 2.3m tall — allow clear space in front of the door for access.
- Waste capacity
- Commonly 200–350 litres, which supports roughly 150–250 uses before a service is due.
- Servicing
- One service per week is standard on ongoing hires; high-use or hot-weather sites often need two.
- Placement
- Firm level ground, within hose reach of a service truck. Soft soil, sand and steep slopes need discussion.
- Power and water
- None required for a standard unit. Flushing, ensuite and trailer units may need water or power.
- Lead time
- A few days for site hires; two to four weeks for weekend events, longer in peak season.

Portaloo hire FAQs
Once a week is the standard schedule on an ongoing hire, covering pump-out, clean and restock. Sites with large crews, food service, alcohol or hot weather commonly move to twice weekly. Agree the frequency in the quote rather than assuming.
