Luxury vs Standard Portaloo Hire: Which Do You Need?
A standard portaloo costs $220-$380 for an event weekend and needs no power or water. A luxury restroom trailer costs $850-$2,400, has flushing toilets, running water and lighting, but needs a level pad and often power or water. Choose luxury for weddings and VIP events, standard for sites and casual events.
The choice between a standard portaloo and a luxury restroom trailer is not really about budget. It is about whether the facilities are part of the guest experience or simply need to exist.
Standard portaloos
A standard portaloo is a single-stall cabin with a bench toilet over a waste tank, ventilation and hand sanitiser. It needs no plumbing, no power and no water — which is exactly why it dominates construction and casual event hire.
Choose standard when:
- The job is a construction site, civil works or renovation.
- The event is casual, outdoors and short.
- Site access is difficult, unsealed or tight.
- There is no power or water available.
- You need units at short notice.
- Budget is the binding constraint.
Trade-offs: presentation is functional, there is no running water inside unless you add a handwash station, and a hot day in a plastic cabin is not pleasant.
Luxury restroom trailers
A luxury trailer is a towed unit with two or more individual stalls, flushing toilets, running water at a vanity, mirrors, interior lighting and often climate ventilation and music. It reads as a small bathroom rather than a portable toilet.
Choose luxury when:
- The event is a wedding, corporate function or VIP hospitality.
- Guests are dressed formally and will spend time in the facilities.
- Photography matters and a row of plastic cabins would be visible.
- The event runs long enough that comfort compounds.
Trade-offs: cost is three to six times a standard unit, site requirements are genuinely more demanding, and lead times are longer because fleets are small.

Compare the whole brief, not the headline rate
The cheapest unit is frequently not the lowest total cost. Two standard units plus a handwash station plus delivery on a difficult access site can land close to a small trailer. Before deciding, price:
- Delivery and collection, itemised
- Servicing during the event, if required
- An attendant, for larger functions
- Handwash stations, if the unit has no internal basin
- Weekend or after-hours delivery premiums
- Generator hire, if a trailer needs power you do not have
The middle option people miss
If a full trailer is out of reach but a bare standard unit will not do, ask about a premium single or ensuite-style unit — a flushing single cabin with an internal basin. It presents far better than a basic portaloo at well under trailer cost, and suits smaller weddings and functions.

Frequently asked questions
For most weddings with 80 or more guests, yes. Guests spend real time in the facilities and a trailer with flushing toilets, running water, mirrors and lighting reads as part of the venue rather than a compromise. Below about 50 guests a well-presented standard unit with a handwash station is often sufficient.
